The Difference between Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Material Research Paper

The Difference between Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Material - Research Paper Example On the other hand, an environmental hazard is a state of events with the potential to threaten its surrounding natural substances and hence adversely affect the health of people in that particular environment. Therefore, hazards are categorized into five types depending on their cause as follows; psychosocial hazards, mechanical, physical, biological and chemical hazards. Notably, a hazard is not the same as a risk. While a hazard is a source of potential damage, harm or adverse health effects, a risk is the combination of a probability that an event or incident may bring negative results. A hazardous waste is any waste substance that is dangerous and or is potentially harmful to the health of human beings and the environment. Such wastes can be liquids, solids, sludge or even gasses. Hazardous wastes may be in the form of the disposed commercial products, cleaning fluids or the by-products of any manufacturing processes. The different types of hazardous wastes are categorized into listed wastes, characteristic wastes, universal wastes and mixed wastes. It follows that specific procedures determine the ways in which wastes are identified, classified, listed, and also delisted. On the other hand, a hazardous material is any dangerous good in the form of a solid, liquid or gas with the potential to harm people, other living things, cause damage to property as well as cause damage to the environment. Such dangerous goods could be a biohazard, flammable substances, and allergens or constitute elements that render them hazardous at particular circumstances and instances. H owever, there is a relationship between hazardous wastes and hazardous material (LaGrega, Buckingham & Evans, 2010). It is through the use or getting in contact with hazardous materials that hazardous wastes are produced. Without hazardous materials, there would be no hazardous wastes. For instance, pesticides are used to control pests at homes or in

Pricing strategy Essay Home depot is a store dealing with home appliances and other household consumables. I will look at the pricing strategy of refrigerators. Most prices of different brands of refrigerators are set to match the prices of their competitors. This is because mostly the competitors are operating in the same environment. it is essential to offer better quality brands with the same price as competitors. However when setting the price, the objective is to ensure profitability of the firm is taken care by the price set. The profit firm must incorporate capital requirements and the associated gains that cover the expenses of the organization. Always the profit considered in price setting is equals to price less cost of sales. While capital gains is equivalent the current assets and fixed assets running costs.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In choosing the target, market for refrigerator is made during the construction of sores. Video Game Advertising Today Media Essay

Video Game Advertising Today Media Essay Video games are a fast growing source of entertainment for people of all ages. Every person can find a video game that he or she is interested in, because of this, advertising in video games has become a necessity for marketing companies. They have the resources and the money to pay companies like Massive to feature their ad in a video game. Using this method, every person that plays that game will see that advertisement. There are two main ways to advertise in a video game, static in-game advertising, or dynamic in-game advertising. Dynamic in-game advertising is more efficient and effective. Therefore, dynamic in-game advertising is more effective than static in-game advertising. In-game advertising is the advertising of ads in computer and video games. According to JJ Richards from the Microsoft Corporation Research in North America indicates that in-game advertising is highly successful for brands (Par 8). In the game industry, in-game advertising is used to even out the cost for making the game. For advertisers however, in-game advertising offers an opportunity to target the 18-34 male age group who spend more time playing video games then they do watching television. If the advertisers can get this age group and more to look at their ads, it will give them more money. This means that video game advertising is effective for advertisers. There are two types of advertising in video games, static in-game advertising and dynamic in-game advertising. Static in-game advertising is a method of advertising that allows marketers to place their ad in a video game, but they cannot change the ad, or remove it from the game. Although, this method lets all the gamers see their ad, it has been permanently coded into the game. Therefore, if the ad goes out of date, or the product is no longer sold, the advertisement will still remain in that video game. This is a major disadvantage if, the marketers are having an event with a certain product, and the event only lasts till a certain date. Therefore, if the marketers wanted to pay for static advertising in a video game, that advertisement would have to be a logo of a product that would not change, and would always remain up to date. Also, if the advertisers wanted to track which players were looking at the ad, and for how long, Static in-game advertising would be ineffective. Ed Bart lett from imediaconnection writes, It is currently impossible to accurately track ad viewing metrics, or to update or switch off campaigns (Par 10). This proves that the modifications that can be made with dynamic in-game advertising make it more effective. Dynamic advertising is a much smarter and efficient method of in-game advertising. Instead of the permanent form of static in-game advertising, dynamic advertising works with an internet connection. Most games today, allow for the player to play online. Because of this, dynamic advertising was made, and used in many of the next generation console games. Michael Goodman, Yankee Groups director for digital entertainment said, When I play the game today, I see one ad, and when I play the game three weeks from now, there are completely different ads in the game ( Par 15).Not only does the player notice the ads, it helps with the feeling of the game. Advertisements change in the real world, so changing up the scenery in the game world will make it feel more realistic. Now that technology has developed further to enable online play, marketers and advertisers can use it to their advantage. It allows marketers to change their advertisements whenever the need, or want to. A company spokespers on from Sony explains that Online games mean greater flexibility for advertisers as to when, where and how long to advertise (Par 2). This means that the advertisers will have more control over their advertisements. This in turn makes dynamic in-game advertising even more effective. Because dynamic advertising is online, now advertisers can know how long a player looks at their ad, and from what angle. The in-game key metrics available to advertisers are, impressions, time of exposure, day part and geography. This means that the advertisers can get statistics on how well their ad played in the video game, and use the information to their advantage. Advertisers can put food, or drink advertisements into a video game to target an audience. Although the player doesnt yearn for the food or beverage, their impulses tell them to go out and buy the product. This is a clever strategy advertisers use to get to the audience. The only disadvantage of dynamic in-game advertising is that a lot of games can be played offline as well. Because of this, players can play offline and avoid the advertisements, and the advertisers will not get the research they need. Even though advertisers have the freedom to put any ad into a video game, they still have to think about the audience. If the advertisers want their ad to be in a game, it has to make the player feel as though he or she really is in the game. An article from the Economist Newspaper states, Billboards look wrong in a fantasy adventure, but they make sports  games, or those set in modern times, seem more realistic (73). This takes away from the gaming experience for the player. Advertisers have to be smart and actually put brand logos in the game that are relevant to the game. This not only pleases the player, it pleases the game industry to know that this ad helped players get fully engrossed in their game. Since the development of dynamic in-game advertising, static in-game advertising has not been used as much. The video game industry has been relying on mainly dynamic in-game advertising, because it is more effective. Dynamic in-game advertising works, and because of that, static in-game advertising will most likely never be used again. Dynamic in-game advertising has more potential, because advertisements are not the only thing that they can change. An article in the Economist Newspaper says, As well as appealing to mobile phones and clothes, it also has huge potential for promoting films, another possibility is to update the music in  games  too, and promote new singles (73). This means that advertisements are not the only things that can be changed using dynamic in-game advertising. This opens a door to endless possibilities that dynamic in-game advertising can do. So, not only is dynamic in-game advertising effective when it comes to advertisements, it is effective when it co mes to other products as well. All of this research proves that dynamic in-game advertising is more effective than static in-game advertising. With technology today, static in-game advertising is obsolete. Which means, dynamic in-game advertising is more effective that static in-game advertising.

Civil War Journal Essay example -- essays research papers

1861, July 16 The battle of Bull Run ended today. Northerners, like myself, know it as Bull Run but the Confederates know it as Manassas. This battle is giving me bad thoughts about the outcome of this war. This was a Southern victory and the Confederate army looks high in spirit and high in confidence, compared to the hurt, tired, and disappointed North. The great leadership of the Confederate generals won this battle. Their plans and attacks were no match for the Union ones. I hope the North can do something to rebound from this great loss, maybe there will be a second battle. 1862, December 31 Today I attended a gathering at the Tremont Temple. It was in Boston so I had to travel a ways. At the Tremont Temple many black, including myself celebrated the issuance of the Emancipation proclamation that is effective at midnight tonight. At the gathering everyone's spirits were high and everybody was excited. The black men who have learned that the Emancipation could mean the end of slavery were as happy as little boys were when they were getting a present. They have forgotten everything bad about being black, but its only temporary, the struggling of slaves and in this time period cannot be measured. At midnight tonight, millions and millions of people's lives will be changed. 1863, January 1 Today, the 1st of January is the day where the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abe Lincoln begins. The streets are filled with free blacks celebrating and rejoicing. People are having parties and celebrating but most of all praying. Groups of blacks are praying together and thanking God for setting them free. 1863, February 24 Today I became an agent for the U.S. Government to recruit Negro soldiers into the Union Army. These black men will be involved in all black regiments and fight the Confederate army. My prediction is that it won't be hard to find willing blacks to fight for the Union. I hope this is successful and the blacks will have a big part in freeing all slaves and winning the Civil War. 1863, February 27 Today I issued the "Men of Color, to Arms." This challenge to black men to fly to arms, and smite with death the power that would bury the government and your liberty in the same grave. I worked on the end of my message for a long time to get my point across, it sounded like this, "Remember that in a contest with oppression, t... ...can still survive without him. He has played a big part in rebuilding this country and if you are Southern or Northern you know that and recognize it. 1865, April Today I had another speech at the annual meeting of Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in Boston on "What the Black Man Wants." Basically it was about the rights blacks should have, and how we deserve them now because we are free. 1865, May 30 Another speech to add to my many†¦ I spoke at a memorial meeting on the life and death of Lincoln. Negroes of New York City called this memorial after New York Common Council refused to permit Negroes to participate in the funeral procession when Lincoln's body passed through the city. This was a great way to show how much we appreciate and respect Lincoln. 1865, August 17 Today I thanked Mrs. Lincoln for sending me the president's walking stick. This was a very nice gesture of her and I will cherish this piece of his life. 1865, October Today I delivered a lecture at the inauguration of Douglass Institute, school for Negro children. I think this school will help the black children learn and become successful in their life. I am glad I am making a difference.

Driving Consumer Needs: Evaluating the Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman Essay

Introduction Wal-mart has transformed the corporate and consumer culture in America and the rest of the world- by focusing on its corporate mission of Very Low Prices, Always, Wal-mart placed itself as a fixture in the everyday lives of millions of people. Fishman (2006) in his book The Wal-Mart Effect shows us exactly how Wal-Mart figures in everyday corporate and consumer lives making it the biggest and most influential company in the world today. This paper evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the book using a sociological perspective particularly on how the author characterizes the impact of Wal-Mart in our contemporary society. Significantly, Fishman had successfully presented us with the positive and negative impact of Wal-Mart both on the business and consumer front. Moreover, to a considerable extent, Fishman was able to show how the interplay of society’s many forces can yield both positive and negative effects. The Wal-Mart Effect Fishman (2006) characterized the economic power of Wal-Mart: it is bigger than ExxonMobil, General Motors and General Electric and rakes about US$244.5 bullion sales in 2005 and it outcasts the competition by selling in three months what the number two retailer Home Depot sells in one year. Rich with anecdotes and stories, the primary thesis of Fishman’s The Wal-Mart Effect is that there is a price that needs to be paid in order to have the cheapest possible prices in everyday Wal-Mart stores- and this price significantly affects the greater part of the American as well as the global society in that Wal-Mart pushes its suppliers and employees to take the negative side of providing its customers with the lowest prices. The fundamental strength of the book is the ability of Fishman to dissect the core strategy of Wal-Mart in lieu with the consumers’ demands. Wal-Mart is projected by Fishman as merely an instrument in feeding the need of consumers for very low prices- or paying for something with almost nothing. Even consumers’ who rejects the cheap prices at Wal-Mart is shown by Fishman to spend at least US$450 a year at Wal-Mart- a proving testimony that consumers are willing to sacrifice the quality of products in order to get the cheapest prices. Furthermore, Fishman successfully showed how Wal-Mart fosters a business relationship with its suppliers and its competing companies- suppliers and other companies are powerless in lieu with the invincibility of Wal-Mart in the retail sector. Almost all companies’ sells at Wal-Mart- being the number one retail store in the country, companies cannot afford not to sell at Wal-Mart. Fishman contends that despite the negative impact of Wal-Mart on the suppliers’ end, they choose to sell at Wal-Mart because not selling at Wal-Mart would mean losing their biggest clientele. Interestingly, Fishman provides the readers with an entertaining work through the illustration of examples. For instance, Fishman showed that while Wal-Mart is a very powerful player in the retail industry, not all suppliers and companies are scrambling for Wal-mart to sell their products. Fishman (2006) illustrated the case of Snapper, the maker of quality and durable lawn mowers where the CEO had refused to sell at Wal-Mart because of the incompatibility of their corporate values with that of the company. Selling prices at almost the same level of the production cost would mean sacrificing the quality of the products- not to mention the salary cuts and the ends to which suppliers would go through just to meet the price that Wal-Mart dictates for their products. Thus, this leads to the fourth argument of Fishman- the cost of low prices for Wal-Mart consumers is manifested in the very low wages of its employees, driving its suppliers to lower their employees’ wages themselves and prompting others to make production in sweatshops exploiting children and workers in third world countries, and in driving the mania of consumers for low-priced but products stripped of the product quality that corporations have initially offered. While Fishman’s The Wal-Mart Effect is essentially driven by the popularity of Wal-Mart, its primary weakness lies in its inability to provide a deeper evaluation of the long-term impact of The Wal-Mart Effect on the consumers. For one, the benefits of Wal-Mart to the consumers is not long-term in nature, Fishman however, did not explore this topic. Moreover, Fishman neither provided a business and sociological framework that shows how Wal-Mart is perceived in the greater part of the society and how Wal-Mart perceives its consumers. Wal-Mart has been a subject of many commentaries and success stories in the business world. For consumers, Wal-Mart is like a haven and similarly, the literature has also projected Wal-Mart on all the positive qualities that can be given to a company. Fishman (2006) in his book provided us with the good and the bad effects of Wal-Mart- whether it is more positive or negative; the author does not say but argues that the impact of Wal-Mart on world markets is very vast. The impact is such that an American eating a Salmon from Wal-Mart significantly affects the economy of Chile. What Fishman (2006) shows is not just the business side of Wal-Mart but its larger impact on the American and world society in general. For one, Wal-Mart significantly dictates the economies of most countries because of their ability to dictate the supplier of their products. Hence, Wal-Mart’s goal for low prices is not a simple mathematical formulation- it involves the interplay of the society’s political, economic and sociological actors. According to Fishman, in their bid to get the lowest prices, consumers are suffering both in terms of quality and in forcing suppliers’ and their workers to cut down on operational and production costs. On the other hand, political institutions are being pressured by Wal-Mart to submit to their demands because of the possible change in a country’s economy once Wal-Mart decides to do business with them. Fishman’s audience spans all individuals regardless of gender, age or socio-economic status. This is because Wal-Mart spans all sociological barriers as well- businesses, suppliers, workers, housewives, even the young adults and adolescents are all familiar with Wal-Mart as a part of their everyday lives. Fishman’s The Wal-Mart Effect is therefore more than just an interesting book; it presents an open-minded presentation and analysis of Wal-Mart and its impact on the greater society. By illustrating examples, Fishma’s the Wal-Mart Effect succeeded and how it had benefited the common American in providing low prices and at the same time, illustrated the cases of Wal-Mart’s suppliers and how Wal-Mart has twisted their corporate values in order to adhere to their own. Using simple illustrations, Fishman was able to tell us that Wal-Mart gives what the consumers ask for- cheaply priced products. However, he also showed the cost of these low prices- sweatshops, measly wages for its employees, changing corporate goals and driving consumers to demand for cheaper products. Feeding this type of consumer system is the goal of Wal-Mart and it is the very reason why consumers are rewarding the company. While Fishman is a journalist, he offered his viewpoints using investigative journalism means and with scholarly ethics not to go overboard. The goal of Fishman is not to show the myth surrounding Wal-Mart but rather to offer an alternate view on how the company operates and how it achieves its goals. Notably, Fishman was successful in providing a book that covers not just a description but rather a deeper understanding of how Wal-Mart works and how it affects every individual and the society. Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fishman’s The Wal-Mart Effect does not offer to provide the scholarly or deeper understanding of the success of Wal-Mart but rather it seeks to present a more balanced view of how Wal-Mart strives to give cheaper products to the consumers. Using an easy-read tone of writing, Fishman captures the imagination and the interest of its readers and takes them into a journey of the different facets and strands of the company. Fishman succeeds in providing the details that readers need in order to form their own conclusion. While most part of the text is judgment-free, one is left asking how the biggest company in the world has achieved that much power to change the very society that created it. Reference Fishman, C.
